Day 4…Exhaustion Setting In

July 10th, 2009

It is the fourth day into my new workout and I had to fight myself to get out of bed. I traveled approximately 6.07 miles on Thursday, a new record, with an average pulse rate of 168.67bpm. My weight increased to 257.5 lbs, most likely due to the four slices of medium Papa John’s pizza with green peppers the night before. I worked lower body today by performing leg extensions, working the hamstrings, calf raises, and squats.

Day 3…Hump Day?

July 10th, 2009

More like Hurt Day. I traveled approximately 3.7 miles on Wednesday, not counting my two laps around a local plaza, with an average pulse rate of 166bpm. My weight has now dropped to 256.0 lbs. I worked upper body today by performing the bench press, military press, curls, tricep pulldowns, lat pulldowns, and the row.

Day 2….The Torture Continues

July 8th, 2009

Just to let my readers know, I will typically be at least one day behind in providing progress updates regarding my workout. As an example, this update is related to my results on July 7, 2009.

I traveled approximately 5.44 miles on Tuesday with an average pulse rate of 170.67bpm. My weight has now dropped to 256.5 lbs. I began my initial lower body workout today by performing leg extensions, working the hamstrings, calf raises, and squats.

Let the Torture Begin!

July 7th, 2009

I started a new workout regime yesterday. Been slacking since the beginning of the year with only fits and starts at trying to get into the habit of working out again. Now I only have approximately eight weeks left of “free” time to really cut off some weight and get back into shape.

I spent three half-hour periods yesterday on the elliptical machine, covering a total of 5.18 miles with an average pulse rate of 168bpm. Man am I out of shape. I also spent time on the weight machine attacking my upper body. Current body weight as of this morning, 256.5 lbs.

I plan on keeping a spreadsheet of all of the vital statistics such as distance, time, pulse rate, weight lifted, reps and sets, and body weight. I will also attempt to track my food intake too. I am hoping this information will help me fine tune my eating habits and workout to become more efficient and observe results more quickly. I will also be posting short blurbs here as well as on several other social sites (ie Facebook, Twitter, etc) discussing daily accomplishments and body weight so friends and family can follow along.

Baker College and Computer Science, Part III

June 10th, 2009

Some of my readers will recall how I previously wrote about the idea of withdrawing from Baker College due to the questionable Bachelor of Computer Science degree program. At that time I decided to stick it out for a bit longer since I had been traveling for my employer and could not afford the risk of taking traditional classes in a brick and mortar school. Since that time, I have been hired on with a new employer which does not require overnight travel so I began once again exploring my options for a degree in the Computer Science field.

I recently visited the Kalamazoo Valley Community College and decided to enroll in the school’s two-year transfer program which is designed for those seeking a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree from Western Michigan University. As long as my grades are kept up, which I have no doubt in my abilities, my new course work at KVCC will transfer directly to WMU once completed. The time it takes to complete this part of the degree will depend on how many credits transfer from Baker College and the other schools I have attended.

The only drawback now will be the lack of time to attend classes in a full time role since I will now have to attend a true classroom unless some of the required courses are offered as web-based courses which means the degree could take a bit longer than expected to complete. However the advantages outweigh this drawback. Some of the advantages are the credit hour cost is a bit over half the amount of Baker College, the degree is fully accredited and will be recognized if I want to advance my academic studies past the Bachelor level, and finally……

No more draconian participation policies which in the past could drop my grade by up to two grades if the facilitator (the teachers/profs. really are not there to teach) did not feel the participatory posts I wrote on the Blackboard system were quality material even if I aced all homework, projects, quizzes and tests within the course! Besides the Blackboard system (do not get me started on this system and its company’s Google Search Results, Blackboard patent lawsuits), the participation policies are the policies I disliked the most since points were assigned for participation based on the facilitator’s opinion.
